I am a single man and here is a truth many women ignore: Believe it or not, many men are shy. They think you look interesting but are not sure how to approach you. So you initiate the contact. Take the initiative or spend another evening alone – it’s your choice.
Here is where you can meet men and how you can get a conversation going.
1. Liquor store
Hang around the Scotch section. The Expensive Scotch section. If he buys single-malt Scotch, he has possibilities. Ask him what Scotch he recommends.
2. Red Soxs Fan
Go to a sports bar. Ask the server to turn on the Red Sox game. Get a drink and sit there and watch the game. There will be a man who will sit next to you and start talking and talking about the Red Sox. He is probably a pretty good guy, despite the fact he is a Red Sox fan. Ask him if the Red Sox miss Manny
3. Book Store
Men who like to read tend to be good communicators. Again select a subject – say Mysteries. Tell a man you are looking for a new author to read – who does he recommend?
4. Coffee Shop
Go to a coffee shop with internet. Find a cute man who is working on a laptop. Ask him if you can use the plug next to him, to plug in your laptop.
5 . Power Tools
You are a single woman and need help selecting a drill. The best person to help you is that good looking man next to you.
6. Health Food Store
If a man is in a health food store, that has to be a good sign. He may not be healthy, but at least he is thinking about it. Use the old “What do you recommend…” routine.
7. Wine tastings
Check your local newspaper for local wine tastings. Most times they are free or at the most, five bucks. There will be at least two or three single men who go to wine tastings to meet a woman. And wine tastings are far better than bars – you can actually talk without that obnoxious drunk leaning on you. Of course, you will ask him what wine he likes best ….
8. Park it
Many people say buy a dog to meet men. That is just plain silly. Why buy a dog which you have to take care of for the next 12 years? Just borrow your neighbor’s and take it for a walk in the park. Again – see a man you like, congratulate him on how shiny his dog’s coat is. Ask him about the dog’s diet.
9. Work functions
Not yours of course. Heck you already know everyone you work with. But go to a friend’s work function – perhaps the company picnic – a great conversation started is what does he do at the company..
Wrangle invitations to openings. A classic example is an art gallery opening. Think of the type of man who would attend such an opening. Ask him what he thinks about Edward Hopper, or if he likes water colors or oils.
11. Charity Benefits
These do not have to be $500 a plate dinners. Many local charities have small affordable fund raisers. For instance, your local Animal Shelter might be having an event which you could attend. Of course you can ask the man why he supports this particular charity.
12. Art Fairs
A great place to “bump” into single men. Of course you are thinking about buying a painting and need to ask him what he thinks.
13. The Driving Range
Don’t start to play golf. Way too complicated and time consuming. But check out your local driving range. You are expected to be terrible, after all that is why you are at the driving range practicing. And it is cheap. Pick up a club at a garage sale and that is all you need – one club. The driving range supplies the balls and believe me – there is nothing more satisfying than getting that aggression you have been building up all week, by smacking a few balls. And of course, you will need to ask that cute guy next to you for some advice.
Men like craps. And they like a pretty woman to roll the dice for luck. Casinos are free, drinks are free and of course you will need to ask that man next to you some tips on Craps. And remember at a craps table, people are crowded together.
15. Garage Sale
Have a garage sale. Hey don’t laugh. I am over 40 and go to garage sales all the time. So do other single men. Have a conversation piece at the garage sale, say a real ugly painting. Then you can display your sense of humor by trying to tease him into buying it
16. Men’s Department
Hello – where do men shop? In the men’s department of course. Pretend you are buying something for your dad and again – ask for his advice. Did I mention that men love giving advice?
17. Grocery Store
Yes we do shop. And when you see a man you are interested in – it is very simple. Just pick up a food item and ask him, ” Have you ever tried this _____? What do you think? ” Simple, but it works because men – as you know – are flattered when you ask for advice.
18. Baseball Game
Have a minor league baseball team in town? Go to a game, buy a scorecard and sit behind or in front of a man you like. Ask him some questions about how to keep score.
19. Electronic Store
Men love electronics. Act like you are buying a new laptop. Ask a man if he knows which laptop is best and what does he recommend?
20. Go to an AA meeting
Sound silly? Hello – over 75 percent of the people at AA meetings are men. And some are successful businessmen who have not touched liquor in years.
